GAP-Online

Hello dear members,

+++New location of GAP-Online +++

Here is some information about our new Internet Center (in Ludwig Street 13): The Internet Center has beginning March 1, 1999, the following opening times:

Monday 5-7 PM

Tuesday 10-12 AM

Wednesday 5-7 PM

Thursday 4-7 PM

and possibly, by previous arrangement, Friday 10-12 AM.

Tel. 08821 / 945014, Fax: 0821 / 945015

Our secretary Margarete Thuemling will be present during the opening times.

The internet center is not only thought of for our "customers" but is in the back of a school room with up to 8 available computers with internet connection.

This room can be used by our MEMBERS IN GROUPS. The head of the group (at least 18 years of age and reliable) is responsible for the order (smoking is forbidden, no food and drinks on the computer tables, garbage must be taken with you, the end of the evening is at 20 PM). Registration must be made on the calender in the Internet Center. The key must be picked up ahead of time and retured to a named place afterwards. (Possibly there are small training or work groups or "just" free surfing.) Use is free (as well as surfing).

In addition to existing groups (for example WWW, Technik, Linus, Aktive, Info-Line, officials, women, seniors etc...) new groups can form (for example, youth groups from individual towns, WWW-groups from a town, groups of friends, neighbors, etc...). They must, however, have a group leader who is at least 18 years of age and reliable.

The room can also be used for presentations (for example, introduction to Internet by officials, the Traffic Association, etc...).

Further suggestions for the use of the room can be made. Individual use is unfortunately not possible since a reliable group leader must be present.

One more date to note is the official opening on Saturday, February 27, 1999 at 10 AM.

Greetings, the club officers

+++Internet Philosophy+++

In 1977, ARPANET was connected with a satelite and a network and the Ethernet developed by Xerox-Parac connected to TCP/IP.

In 1983, ARPANET converted to TCP/IP. In this year a number of networks connected with Internet. The network of networks took on form.

In 1989 the World Wide Web (WWW) was formed in Switzerland. The American, Tim Berners-Lee from the European Institute for Particle Physics in Gent laid the fundament and it was implimented in 1990.

In 1993, the popularity of the WWW increased, especially with the introduction of the WWW browser NSCA Mosaic. This and other easy to use browsers made the WWW attractive for the masses.

In 1998 it was estimated that Internet was used by far more than 80 million members and interest increased from day to day. Every month thousands of new users join. Most of the computers are located in the US, followed by Canada, Australia, England and Germany. Japan should't be forgotten; then the other European lands follow.

+++Free Surf Day in the VHS+++

On Sunday, Jan. 31, there is an Electronic-Data-Processing and Internet Information Day at the VHS in both Electronic-Data-Processing rooms of the BHS in Garmisch-Partenkirchen from 10.00 AM to 4PM. Everyone can become informed. Information is available about Electronic-Data-Processing, Internet, E-Mail, Web pages and much more. It's worth a visit!

+++Club Evening+++

The next club evening is on Wednesday, February 3, 1999 at 8 PM in the Gasthof zur Linde Badgasse 11, in the Partenkirchen side of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

+++Women's Get Together+++

Our next Women's Get Together is on Thursday, February 25. The theme is: Homebanking and paying with credit cards in Internet. All interested members as well as guests are warmly welcomed. +++Humor Corner+++

Mark comes home completely exhausted. "What a day. The computer broke down."

"And why are you so exhausted?"

"I had to do the thinking myself!"
